The pair of kidneys in human body are meant to purify the blood. When you eat food which contains several minerals and salts apart from other nutrients, these minerals and salts are absorbed into the blood during the process of digestion. This blood is then passed through the kidneys to remove the hazardous chemicals and excess minerals and salts from the blood. These excess minerals and salts get stuck into the kidneys. When you drink water, the kidneys are flushed and these particles go into the urinary bladder with the urine and get excreted from the body. However those people who do not consume enough water are not able to clean their kidneys of these minerals and salts which combine together to form stones in the kidneys. Some of these stones are stuck in the kidneys and cause severe unannounced pain. Some of these stones then pass further with the urine into the ureter. Ureter is a thin tube which connects the kidneys to the urinary bladder. Once the stones pass the ureter and go into the urinary bladder then they would get flushed out of the body when you pass urine. However if the stones get stuck into the ureter then they stop the flow of urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder and this causes infection in the kidneys which could ultrimately result in kidney failure if proper and timely treatment is not taken. The first line of treatment for ureteric stones is the same as that for the kidney stones which is to flush them out through the use of medicines and water. Drink plenty of water and the doctor will give you medicines like Lacix which increases the flow of urine. In some cases the patient is admitted to the hospital and the same medicine is administered through IV fluids to flush out the stone which is stuck in the ureter. However if the medical management fails to achieve the desired results then a small surgery is required which can be done without giving you any cuts or incisions. The surgery is called ureteroscopic removal of ureteric and kidney stones.
In this surgery, the urologist uses an equipment called ureteroscope which consists of an eyepiece at one end, a rigid or flexible tube in the middle, and a high definition camera and light at the other end of the tube. The urologist inserts this thin tube through the central opening of the penis called urethra in men and through the vagina in women and pushes it slowly to enter the urinary bladder. The LED light at the tip of the flexible tube illuminates the internal organs and the high definition camera sends very high resolutions pictures of the inside walls of the urethra and the urinary bladder. The urologist further pushes the flexible tube to enter the ureter from the urinary bladder and picks up the stone which is stuck into the ureter through a forcep. The urologist will either crush the stone into smaller pieces or will pull out the stone through the same route. The urologist can even enter the kidneys through this route to remove small stones from them. The surgery is done through natural opening of the body and does not require any incisions. This means that the recovery time post surgery is almost nil and the patient can get back to work within no time after discharge from the hospital which is done on the same day as the surgery. The urologist might have to place a stent inside the ureter to ensure that the flow of urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder which was stopped by the stone is restored. The stent might have to remain inside the ureter for several weeks till the swelling in the ureter subsides. The stent will be removed through another ureteroscopy for which the patient will have to the admitted to the hospital for few hours. Stones are big problems for the health of the urinary system and they should not be ignored. They cause not only severe pain at times but are also responsible for damage to the kidneys. If the kidneys fail then the person has to either go on dialysis machine or will have to go for kidney transplant surgery both of which are very expensive treatments.
Kidney stones and ureteric stones are treated by the physicians and the urologists. When you land up at the hospital OPD or emergency with severe pain which is suggestive of kidney stones or ureteric stones then a physician might see you first and order the necessary blood tests, urine test and imaging tests like ultrasound, x-ray or CT Scan. Once the stone is diagnosed then it is seen whether there is any kind of infection in the kidney alongwith the stone which is known as hydronephrosis. First of all medical management is tried. The cost for these tests and first consultation would be around 5-6 thousand rupees. The medicines for flushing out kidney or ureteric stones are quite cheap. The Ureteroscopic surgery would cost Rs. 50-65 thousand depending on the category of room chosen by you.
If you have a health insurance card which is given by your company then the surgery is covered from day one while if you have a policy which is purchased by you then this surgery is covered after two years of buying the health policy. However there are some policies where the coverage starts earlier. Not all insurance companies have uniform benefits and therefore it is best to contact the hospital insurance helpdesk with your policy to know the exact coverage available to you. If the hospital is not on the cashless panel of your insurance company then you would get reimbursement for the payment done by you at the hospital for your treatment. This is a very simple process in which you have to fill a claim form, attach the hospital bills, cancelled cheque and the payment would come to your bank account within 15-20 days. The hospital insurance help desk will do the entire paperwork for you so that you do not face any difficulty in getting the reimbursement for your treatment expenses.
