What Is Prostate Cancer

Prostate is a walnut sized organ situated near the urinary bladder and the rectum. Prostate gland produces the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports the sperms. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. Prostate cancer normally grows slowly and is mostly confined inside the prostate gland. However sometimes the prostate cancer grows rapidly and spreads to the nearby organs like the Urinary bladder. If prostate cancer is diagnosed early then the treatment outcomes are better.

Symptoms of Prostate Cancer

In early stages the Prostate Cancer may not give any symptoms but in the advanced stage the following symptoms might appear

Trouble Urinating
Decreased pressure in Urine
Blood in Semen
Discomfort in the pelvic area
Bone Pain
Erectile Dysfunction

Causes of Prostate Cancer

There are no specific causes of prostate cancer but some of the below factors do play a part in the development of prostate cancer in men :

Race : Black men have a greater chance of prostate cancer and this cancer in black men is more aggressive.
Family History : This cancer runs in the family like so many other cancers. If the men in the previous generation of your family had prostate cancer then your chances of getting this cancer are higher.
Obesity : Obesity has a role in most of the cancers, similarly obese men are at a greater risk for prostate cancer.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosing Prostate Cancer is not that difficult. Men above the age of 50 must undergo Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) a blood test where higher than normal values should prompt you to take up further tests. The next test would be a Rectal Examination where a phyician inserts a finger in your rectum to feel the prostate gland. If there is a change in the shape, size or texture of the prostate gland then one is advised to go for an ultrasound examination. This exam known us TRUS (Trans Rectal Ultrasound) is done by inserting a thin ultrasound probe in your rectum through your anus to get an image of the prostate gland. Further testing may include prostate biopsy or MRI Fusion studies which will give a fairly good idea about prostate cancer.

Radical Prostectomy - Surgical removal of the prostate gland and the surrounding tissue is the best treatment for Prostate Cancer if the cancer is restricted to the gland and not spread in other organs of the body. Prostate Cancer grows by feeding on the testosterone so reducing the production of testosterone in your body slows the growth of prostate cancer. One way of doing it is by removing the testicles. Another way is use of Hormonal therapy to reduce the production of testosterone. The side effects of this is erectile dysfunction or reduced sex drive.

Chemotherapy or Radiation Therapy - are also used to either shrink the size of the prostate gland or burn the cancerous cells. They may be successful in some of the patients and not so successful in other patients. Other therapies like Cryotherapy are sometimes used in patients where chemo or radiation does not give desired results.

Best Doctors and Cost

A Urologist would be performing the surgery called radical prostatectomy which is removal of the prostate. This in most cases is the first line of treatment to start with in case of prostate cancers. After the completion of the treatment it is very important to keep a watch for recurrence. Patient needs to get a PET CT scan done once a year and an ultrasound very three months. Cost of the surgery is approximately INR 65000 to INR 75000. Cost of chemotherapy or immunotherapy would be extra and would depend upon the biopsy report.
