The pair of kidneys in human body are meant to purify the blood. When you eat food which contains several minerals and salts apart from other nutrients, these minerals and salts are absorbed into the blood during the process of digestion. This blood is then passed through the kidneys to remove the hazardous chemicals and excess minerals and salts from the blood. These excess minerals and salts get stuck into the kidneys. When you drink water, the kidneys are flushed and these particles go into the urinary bladder with the urine and get excreted from the body. However those people who do not consume enough water are not able to clean their kidneys of these minerals and salts which combine together to form stones in the kidneys. The kidney stones can give severe pain in the abdominal region towards the back. Once such a pain is experienced, the patient should consult a physician who would order an ultrasound of the KUB region. The stones can be very easily diagnosed on ultrasound examination or CT Scan examination. Even X-Rays of the abdomen can diagnose most of the kidney stones. However ultrasound remains the gold standard for diagnosing Kidney stones. If the stones are less than 1 cm in size then the physician will give you some medicines which increase the pressure of urine and flush out the stones. You will be asked to drink more water alongwith these medicines. Some people recommend drinking beer for flushing the kidney stones. Beer has the same effect as the medicines but with inebriation. In Indian households where drinking openly is not acceptable in most of the cases, the idea of being officially allowed to drink beer is found a better option by many people. Kidney stones which are bigger than 1 cm cannot be flushed out through medicines unless they get broken into smaller pieces. In such cases after trying a course of medication, if the repeat ultrasound shows that the kidney stone has not moved from its place, then surgery is the option.
When the kidney stones fail to get flushed through medications and even beer therapy then it is time to consider alternatives. One option is Lithotripsy in which the patient is lying on a table and belt is tied around the waist. This belt produces powerful sound waves which can break the bigger kidney stone into smaller pieces which can then get flushed out with urine. Lithotripsy is not always successful in breaking the stones and its cost of Rs. 35-40 thousand for one sitting can be prohibitive for most of the patients in India. However the procedure is non invasive and can be performed on an outpatient basis without getting admitted to the hospital. If the Lithotripsy is not successful in breaking the stone then the urologist may suggest you to go for stone removal surgery which is call Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL). In this surgery the surgeon will use a telescope to enter the kidney through small incisions on your back and either break the stone into smaller pieces or pick the stone through a forcep and bring it out. The surgery removes the stone from the kidney but the process of entering the kidney does some damage to the tissues of the kidney. If is therefore always preferable to get the treatment for kidney stones when the stones are smaller in size and surgery can be avoided. Since this is a minimally invasive surgery, the patient can go home within a day of the surgery and there is not much bed rest required. A stent is placed in the kidney to drain out the urine from the kidney into the urinary bladder till the kidney heals after the surgery and is able to perform its function normally. This stent is removed few weeks after the surgery. The stone can be sent to the laboratory for composition analysis so that it can found as to what foods are causing the formation of kidney stone in your case. Avoiding such foods and drinking adequate water is the best way to prevent a recurrence of kidney stone. Removal of kidney stone once does not guarantee that such stones will not be formed in the future.
Kidney stones are treated by the physicians and the urologists. When you land up at the hospital OPD or emergency with severe pain which is suggestive of kidney stones then a physician might see you first and order the necessary blood tests, urine test and imaging tests like ultrasound, x-ray or CT Scan. Once the kidney stone is diagnosed then it is seen whether there is any kind of infection in the kidney alongwith the stone which is known as hydronephrosis. First of all medical management is tried. The cost for these tests and first consultation would be around 5-6 thousand rupees. The medicines for flushing out kidney stones are quite cheap. The beer therapy may set you back by another 5-6 thousand rupees if you prefer that over the medications. Lithotripsy costs Rs. 35-40 thousand for each session while PCNL surgery would cost Rs. 50-65 thousand depending on the category of room chosen by you.
If you have a health insurance card which is given by your company then the surgery is covered from day one while if you have a policy which is purchased by you then this surgery is covered after two years of buying the health policy. However there are some policies where the coverage starts earlier. Not all insurance companies have uniform benefits and therefore it is best to contact the hospital insurance helpdesk with your policy to know the exact coverage available to you. If the hospital is not on the cashless panel of your insurance company then you would get reimbursement for the payment done by you at the hospital for your treatment. This is a very simple process in which you have to fill a claim form, attach the hospital bills, cancelled cheque and the payment would come to your bank account within 15-20 days. The hospital insurance help desk will do the entire paperwork for you so that you do not face any difficulty in getting the reimbursement for your treatment expenses.
