Kidney cancer begins in the kidneys. The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs, each about the size of your fist. They're located behind your abdominal organs, with one kidney on each side of your spine. In adults, renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of kidney cancer — about 90 percent of cancerous tumors.
Symptoms of Kidney Cancer
Kidney cancer rarely causes signs or symptoms in its early stages. And currently there are no routine tests used to screen for kidney cancer in the absence of symptoms. In the later stages, kidney cancer signs and symptoms may include:
Blood in the urine which may be pink, red or cola coloured.
Pain in the back or side which persists.
Loss of appetite
Unexplained Weight Loss
Fatigue and general body weakness
Low Grade unexplained fever

High Blood Pressure
The diagnosis of Kidney Cancer mostly happens accidently when the patient is undergoing Ultrasound of the Abdomen for any kind of pain abdomen and the radiologist sees the tumour in the kidney. Further investigations would be some blood tests, CT Scan or MRI of the KUB Region. Ultrasound or CT Guided Biopsy is done to confirm the nature of the kidney cancer. Once it is confirmed that the tumour is malignant then whole body PET CT is done to find out whether the tumour is restricted to the kidneys or have spread to other parts of the body.
Surgery - Surgery for removing the tumour is the best line of treatment. If the tumour is in the early stage then just the tumour can be removed and the surgery is called Partial Nephrectomy while if the tumour is large then it is best to remove the entire kidney and the surgery is called Total Nephrectomy. Since we have two kidneys the patient can live normal life with one kidney also but has to keep a close watch on the health of the remaining kidney.
Non Surgical Treatments - The non surgical treatment options for small kidney tumours are Heat - Radiofrequency Ablation and Cold - Cryoablation. Targetted Therapy, Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy or their combinations can also be used.
A Urologist would be performing the surgery called nephrectomy which is removal of the kidney. This in most cases is the first line of treatment to start with in case of kidney cancers. If the cancer is only in the kidney and has not gone into the renal arteries then patient would need few cycles of chemotherapy. After the completion of the treatment it is very important to keep a watch for recurrence. Patient needs to get a PET CT scan done once a year and an ultrasound very three months. Cost of the surgery is approximately INR 45000 to INR 55000. Cost of chemotherapy or immunotherapy would be extra and would depend upon the biopsy report.
