Injury to the brain is caused mostly during the road traffic accidents. However there could be other reasons for brain injury like fall from height, sports or violent attacks. In India one out of 6 people die due to head injury while the corresponding figure for america is 1 death out of 200 people. This difference is due to the high level of medical care which begins with the arrival of the ambulance and first responders. In India most of the ambulances are just patient carrying vehicles with hardly any equipment or manpower to save the lives of trauma victims. In cases of head injury, most of the deaths take place within the first 2 hours. If timely medical help can be provided to the victims of head injury then many more lives can be saved. Injury to the brain can be of several types - bleeding, midline shift, fracture or damage to the brain tissue. The human skull is quite strong and can tolerate significant collision. The first injury which may take place is the skull fracture. If the bone is not displaced then nothing much needs to be done in cases of fracture except to keep the patient under observation for 24 hours. There could be bleeding inside the brain which could be just inside the skull or inside the brain tissue. The first task of the hospital is to stop the bleeding and then to remove the blood clots which have accumulated in the brain. In most of the cases where bleeding has taken place inside the brain, simple craniotomy with removal of haematoma is done. This is not a very difficult surgery and the results are immediate. Due to the shock and injury, the brain tissue starts to swell and increases the intracranial pressure inside the brain. Just removing the skull bone and giving anti inflammatory medication can take care of such cases.
When bleeding takes place inside the brain, the neurosurgeon will use a drill to make a hole in the skull and suck the blood clots out. This surgery is called EDH - Extradural Haematoma Extraction or SDH - Subdural Haematoma Extraction. The cases where the brain has been displaced are more difficult with poor outcomes. If there is damage to the brain tissue due to the accident then there would be deficits in the patient after discharge from the hospital. The first objective for the neurosurgeon is to save the life of the accident victim and the subsequent objective is to save the quality of life to the extent possible. In many head injury cases, the condition of the patient is such that surgery is not possible. In these cases the patients are managed conservatively in the ICU in order to stablize the condition of the patient. The surgery can be done at a later date if still required. In cases of head injury where surgery is done to remove the blood clots, the patient is kept in the ICU for 1-2 days after the surgery and then shifted to the ward. Such patients would be able to sit in the bed and eat food within 2-3 days of the surgery and can be discharged from the hospital within a week. However the length of hospitalization cannot be predicted in the patients of head injury as some patients might not regain consciousness for a long period of time. For some patients maintaing the vitals can be a challenge. For most of the patients of head injury, post discharge rehabilitation is equally important. With proper physiotherapy and occupational therapy, lots of functions which got impaired due to the accident can be recovered. The physiotherapy in some cases may last for 1-2 years. The progress must be monitored by your neurosurgeon at regular intervals.
India has close to 2000 neurosurgeons. Most of the neurosurgeons are comfortable doing head injury cases but the hospitals where they work are mostly not up to the mark. A good trauma hospital must have adequate diagnostic equipments like CT Scan and X-Ray. The hospital must have good operation theatres and a strong ICU backup. The availability of multidisciplinary doctors is one of the most important criteria for any good trauma facility. Brightstar hospital at Moradabad is not only the biggest hospital in the region but is equipped with the latest diagnostic modalities. Our team of doctors include specialists across all the branches of healthcare. Our ICU facility is one of the best in the country to take care any trauma patient.
Whether you have a company given insurance policy or have purchased it on your own, trauma is covered in most of the insurance policies from day one. If the hospital is not on the cashless panel of your insurance company then you would get reimbursement for the payment done by you at the hospital for your treatment. This is a very simple process in which you have to fill a claim form, attach the hospital bills, cancelled cheque and the payment would come to your bank account within 15-20 days. The hospital insurance help desk will do the entire paperwork for you so that you do not face any difficulty in getting the reimbursement for your treatment expenses.
The cost of treatment for head injury depends on the length of stay in the ICU and the ward. Most of the surgeries for head injury can cost between Rs. 40,000 - Rs. 1,00,000. The cost of treatment after head injury can vary hugely.
