Gall Bladder is a pouch like organ just below the liver, which is situated on the right side of the upper abdomen just below the rib cage. Bile is produced in the Liver al through the day and this bile is collected in the gall bladder. Indian diet has a high percentage of fat and this fat in your food is digested with the help of bile juice which is released from the gall bladder into the intestine when you eat your meal. Some substances in the bile cyrstallize to form stones which are known as gall bladder stones. Smaller stones are not a problem as they they move out with the bile into the intestine and are then excreted from the body with the stool. However these smaller stones combine together to form stones which are bigger than 1 cm in size. The mouth of the gall bladder is smaller then 1 cm and then these stones remain in the gall bladder. The stones can cause pain, nausea and inflammation. This severe pain is felt in the right upper abdomen just below the rib cage accompanied by vomitting feeling. The best test for diagnosing the gall stones is an ultrasound examination which must be done on empty stomach. If the gallstones are bigger than 1 cm in size and the patient is experiencing symptoms then removal of gall bladder through surgery is the best option. If the stones are left untreated then they may cause infection in the gall bladder and in some cases even cancer of the Gall Bladder apart from recurring painful symptoms for the patient.
Removal of gall bladder causes no problem in the body except that one has to eat smaller meals and more frequent meals which is considered as a healthy habit for other organs like heart and liver. Some patients may experience diarrhea or fat indigestion after the removal of gall bladder.
The removal of gall bladder through surgery is known is Cholecystectomy. Most of the surgeons have good experience of doing this surgery. With the advent of Laparoscope, most of the gall bladder removals are done through the use of Laparoscopy and the surgery is known as Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy or Lap Chole in short. The surgery takes only 15-20 minutes at the hands of an experienced surgeon and the patient can go home in one day. In this surgery, the surgeon will make 3 small holes and finish the surgery through these holes. No big incisions are required in Laparscopic surgery and therefore the recovery time is much shorter as compared to open surgery. Not all gall bladders can be removed through the use of Laparoscopic. When the gall bladder has infection or is stuck to other nearby organs the open surgery is a better option for the patient. Ordinary Laparoscopes can be procured for around 7-8 lacs of rupees while good quality laparoscopes cost in excess of 20 lacs of rupees. Brightstar hospital has invested in the best quality of high definition laparoscope so that our surgeons can have the confidence of doing the most complex of the surgeries by using the Laparoscopic method. The consumables used in a Laparoscopic surgery are much more than what are used in an open surgery and therefore the cost of the laparoscopic surgery is slightly more than the open surgery. The important question is should the patient get the gall bladder removed even if there are no symptoms. The answer is NO. If the stones are causing any major problem inside the gall bladder like infection or cancer then there would be some symptoms. Getting an ultrasound done on the appearance of any symptom is a good idea and if the symptoms occur frequently then go for the surgery.
The Department of General and Laparosocpic Surgery at Brightstar Hospital is equipped with the most advanced high resolution Laparoscpic Set to carry out all kinds of Laparoscopic, Endoscopic, Hysteroscopic and Ureteroscopic Surgeries with great precision. Most of the patients understand `Laparoscopy' as a `Doorbeen'. The cost of open surgery for Cholecystectomy is in the range of Rs. 25000 - 65000 depending on the room category chosen by the patient while the cost of Laparscopic surgery for Gall Bladder removal is in the range of Rs. 35000 - 75000. The hospital stay for open cholecystectomy is 3 days while that for the Laparoscopic surgery is 2 days.
If you have a health insurance card which is given by your company then the surgery is covered from day one while if you have a policy which is purchased by you then this surgery is covered after two years of buying the health policy. Some companies cover acute cholecystitis earlier than 2 years but to be clear on the issue contact the insurance help desk at the hospital who would be able to guide you properly. Do not forget to carry your insurance policy to get full clarity on the matter. If the hospital is not on the cashless panel of your insurance company then you could get reimbursement for the payment done by you at the hospital for your treatment. This is a very simple process in which you have to fill a claim form, attach the hospital bills, cancelled cheque and the payment would come to your bank account within 15-20 days. The hospital insurance help desk will do the entire paperwork for you so that you do not face any difficulty in getting the reimbursement for your treatment expenses.
