Brain is one of the most complex and most important organ in our body. Your memory and logic are stored in the brain. Almost all the functions of the body are controlled by the brain. The brain cells have a life of few days after which they die and new cells are formed. When there is a change in the nature of some brain cells and they start multiplying at a very rapid pace then a tumour is formed. Some of the brain tumours are benign while some are malignant (cancerous). The difference is that a benign tumour will cause problems in the area of the brain where it is located while a malignant tumour will spread to other organs of the body. Most of the brain tumours have to be removed to restore normal life for the patient. The surgery for brain tumour removal is a major surgery and is performed by Neurosurgeons. This type of surgery is done at very few hospitals which specialize in Brain and Spine Surgeries. Persistent headache, vomitting, nausea, blackout, giddiness are some of the symptoms of brain tumour. The best line of investigation for brain tumour is either Contrast CT Scan or MRI. The results of these imaging tests are to be co-related with blood test reports. Doing biopsy on brain tumour is not always possible so contrast MRI is used to get a good idea about the nature of the brain tumour. Some of the brain tumours are slow in their growth and the patient has time to think and plan the surgery while some brain tumours are so aggressive that they can grow in size within few days. So dilly dallying in the case of brain tumour is not a good idea.
Some of the brain tumours which are located in the frontal region of the brain can be operated by the neurosurgeon through the nasal cavity. For most of the other brain tumours, the neurosurgeon will have to remove a portion of the skull bone to enter into the brain. Once the surgeon gets access to the brain, then slowly the different parts of the brain are carefully manipulated to reach the site of the tumour. Though the neurosurgeons are trained to identify the tumour with naked eye but it is always difficult to differentiate the end of the tumour and the beginning of healthy brain tissue. If the surgeon acts cautiouly and leaves a small part of the tumour in the brain then the tumour can recur in the future. However if the surgeon is aggressive and removes the entire tumour then it is possible that some healthy tissue of the brain is also removed which may result in some kind of deficit after the surgery which was not present before. This is the reason that Neurosurgery is considered as one of the toughest branches of medicine. Despite the best efforts of a neurosurgeon, a fully paralyzed person may become half paralyzed after a successful brain surgery. The tumour which is removed from the brain is sent for biopsy to know the exact nature of the tumour. The surgery could last upto 10-12 hours and the patient is kept in ICU for a couple of days after the surgery. The patient is discharged from the hospital after 6-8 days in the case of a major brain tumour surgery. Followup with the neurosurgeon at 3 months is extremely important after this surgery.
India has close to 2000 neurosurgeons. Most of the neurosurgeons are comfortable doing head injury cases but those who can do a brain tumour surgery with the same ease are not more than 200. The cost of brain tumour surgery could be anywhere between 1.5 - 3.0 lacs of Indian Rupees depending on the category of room and the length of stay. The length of stay also depends on the general health and age of the patient.
If you have a health insurance card which is given by your company then the surgery is covered from day one while if you have a policy which is purchased by you then this surgery is covered after two years of buying the health policy. However there are some policies where the coverage starts earlier. Not all insurance companies have uniform benefits and therefore it is best to contact the hospital insurance helpdesk with your policy to know the exact coverage available to you. If the hospital is not on the cashless panel of your insurance company then you would get reimbursement for the payment done by you at the hospital for your treatment. This is a very simple process in which you have to fill a claim form, attach the hospital bills, cancelled cheque and the payment would come to your bank account within 15-20 days. The hospital insurance help desk will do the entire paperwork for you so that you do not face any difficulty in getting the reimbursement for your treatment expenses.
