Fracture Treatment

The bones in human body can suffer a fracture due to any kind of crash or fall. The fracture is of two types - Simple and Complex. The simple fracture is one where the bone develops a crack but is not displaced from its position. In such cases immobilizing the bone by applying plaster is sufficient for the crack to heal. The patient has to remain in plaster for 15-30 days for most of the simple fractures to heal. Bone fractures are quite easily visible on X-Rays. Before removing the plaster, your orthopaedic surgeon will get another x-ray of the affected bone to ensure that the fracture has healed.

Complex Fractures require more extensive treatment. If the bone is just cracked and got displaced then closed reduction followed by plaster can treat the fracture. However if the bone has got fragmented or crushed then open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is required.

Treatment Options

ORIF: - Open Reduction and Internal Fixation requires the orthopaedic surgeon to give incision and expose the fracture. The surgery requires minimizing the soft tissue stripping and obtaining a reduction of the fracture. Once a reduction is achieved, it must be stabilized and maintained by applying plaster.

Kirschner wires or K-wires are commonly used for temporary and definitive treatment of fractures. However K-wires resist only changes in alignment; they do not resist rotation and they have poor resistance to torque and bending forces. K-wires are commonly used as adjunctive fixation for screws or plates and screws that involve fractures around joints.

Plates and screws are commonly used in the management of articular fractures. Plates provide strength and stability to neutralize the forces on the injured limb for functional postoperative aftercare.

Best Doctors, Cost and Recovery

Our team of orthopaedic surgeons include Trauma Specialists who take care of all kinds of fractures in the body. Our orthopaedic team includes Dr. Gaurav Gupta and Dr. Indranil Haldar both of whom have got excellent results in trauma orthopaedic surgery. The cost of fracture management ranges from Rs. 5000 for a simple plaster to Rs. 3-4 lacs for more complicated surgeries requiring orthopaedic implants like screws and plates. In all orthopaedic surgeries the post surgery rehab is extremely important to get the complete range of motion as it was before the accident. The results of any orthopaedic surgery would get improved tremendously if proper rehabilitation and exercises are done after the surgery. The rehab must be done in consultation with your surgeon.
