Appendix is a very small organ on the right side of the lower abdomen which has no known function in our body. Sometimes the appendix gets inflamed due to bacterial infection and pus collects in the pocket of appendix. The symptoms of appendix include pain either around the naval region or on the right side of lower abdomen, vomitting, loss of appetite, fever, constipation, diahrrea, abdominal bloating etc. When the infection is severe then it can be seen on Ultrasound examination or CT Scan examination. The best way to diagnose an Acute Appendicitis is by clinical examination which is done by a General Surgeon. The pain of appendicitis can subside with antibiotic treatment but can occur again. Sometimes this can happen while you are in a long train journey or in a flight and then the situation becomes tricky. In some cases, if acute appendicitis is not treated timely then the appendix can rupture and the infection can spread in the abodmen which becomes a life threatening situation called peritonitis. In such cases, emergency surgery needs to be done to clear the abdomen of the infection and also to remove the appnedix. Lots of people have doubts that when you go to a surgeon for pain abdomen they will invariably diagnose it as acute appendicitis and subject you to an unnecessary surgery. This belief may not be completely out of place and it is advisable to go to a reputed general surgeon or a surgeon whom you can trust for the treatment of such a condition. Once correct diagnosis about acute appendicitis is made then there are no two views that surgical removal of appendix is the best solution. The surgery can be done in an open manner or through a laparoscope. Most of the newer surgeons are trained in laparoscopy and they would do the surgery using this minimal invasive technique.
Appendix Surgery is the first thing which any surgeon learns to do and therefore most of the surgeons would be adept at doing this surgery. However not all surgeons are trained in Laparoscopy and not every hospital would have the facility of a Laparoscope. The Laparoscopy set costs close to 15 lacs of Rupees, however in metro towns, the laparoscopy set is available on rent for the surgeons to use during any laparoscopic surgery. In open surgery a small incision is given around the lower abdomen area and the appendix is removed. The surgeon then puts stitches at the incision site which are removed in 7-10 days time. These days dissolvable stitches are used which need not be removed and would dissolve on their own once the wound heals completely.
In Laparoscopic Appendicectomy the surgeon makes three small holes of size less than 1 cm each. Through these holes the laparoscopic instruments enter inside the abdomen and the surgery is done using high resolution images on a computer screen. Since the images are highly magnified the precision of the surgery is much higher in the case of Laparoscopic surgery as compared to the open surgery. The loss of blood is also much lesser and minimal stitches are required. In open surgery the hospital stay is 2-3 days and the total recovery time is 10-15 days while in Laparoscopic surgery the hospital stay is just one day and the patient recovers in 5-7 days time. If the appnedix has not ruptured then laparoscopic surgery is the best choice provided it is available at the hospital which you prefer to visit. However if the appendix has ruptured then laparoscopic surgery may not be possible and the decision of the surgeon in such cases must be followed by the patient. In any case the surgeon must decide on the best course of treatment.

If you have a health insurance card which is given by your company then the surgery is covered from day one while if you have a policy which is purchased by you then this surgery is covered after two years of buying the health policy. Some companies cover acute appendicitis earlier than 2 years but to be clear on the issue contact the insurance help desk at the hospital who would be able to guide you properly. Do not forget to carry your insurance policy to get full clarity on the matter. If the hospital is not on the cashless panel of your insurance company then you could get reimbursement for the payment done by you at the hospital for your treatment.
