Disc is the soft cushioning structure located between the individual bones of the spine, called “vertebra.” It is made of cartilage-like tissue and consists of an outer portion, called the annulus and an inner portion, called the nucleus. In most cases, the disc is flexible enough to allow the spine to bend. Disc acts as the shock absorber and prevents the vertebrae to grind against each other during movement.
An artificial disc (also called disc prosthesis or spine arthroplasty device) is a device that is implanted into the spine to imitate the functions of a normal disc (carry load and allow motion). Artificial disc replacement surgery involves replacing a painful and damaged disc with an artificial disc. Artificial disc surgery or a disc replacement surgery may be performed by a neurosurgeon or an orthopaedic spine specialist.
In India we see lots of patients with different spine problems. Not all patients would need surgery for their spinal issues. The indications for disc replacement varies for each patient. During the aging process, discs can weaken and develop tears or cracks in the outer portion. This results in degenerative disc disease which causes pain in the back. The inner portion may bulge out and press against the outer portion resulting in pain. The purpose of artificial disc replacement is to replace the worn out disc and preserve the mobility of the spine.
The surgery can be done with a very small incision in the back. The surgeon uses an endoscope and high resolution microscope to perform minimal invasive spine surgery. The worn out disc is removed and it is replaced with an artificial disc. The surgery takes 45 - 60 minutes and the incision is closed using dissovable stitches. The patient is back on feet within a day of the surgery and is able to do all routine activities without any help.
