Getting pregnant is one of the happiest moment in the life of any couple. This is an extremely important part of the continuation of human life. The reproductive organs in the female body are vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. The vagina is connected to the uterus through the cervix and the uterus is connected to the ovaries through the fallopian tubes. The male reproductive organs are the testes which produce sperms which are passed through the penis into the female vagina during intercourse. The female ovaries produce eggs which get fertilized by the sperm and pregnancy happens. It is easier said than done. There is many a slip between the cup and the lip. The potency and the count of the sperms have to be satisfactory for the egg to be fertilized. The female reproductive organs must work in perfect cohesion for the life to be sustained. Due to the malfunctioning of the male and the female hormones pregnancy is becoming difficult in many cases and due to this reason the number of infertility cases are rising. Sometimes the egg gets fertilized in the fallopian tubes which is called ectopic pregnancy and the patient needs urgent abortion to save the life of the female. Once the egg is properly fertilized then the baby starts to grow within the uterus. The heartbeat of the foetus is developed around 5-6 weeks and the female must be under the care of a gynaecologist for proper evaluation and monitoring of the foetal and maternal health. First ultrasound is done around 6 weeks to see the viability of the foetus. The second ultrasound is done around 12-15 weeks to make sure that there is no congenital anomaly in the foetus. Another ultrasound or colour doppler is done around the 30th week to see the position of the foetus and to see the cord around the neck. The position of the foetus and the status of the cord helps the gynaecologist in deciding whether to go for normal delivery or cesarian section delivery.
One of the most important factor determining the type of delivery is the position of the baby. If the head of the baby is downwards towards the vagina then the chances of normal delivery are high. If the ultrasound reveals that the baby is in breach position - meaning that the head of the baby is not downwards then there are some exercises and processes by which the position of the baby can be changed by the time of the delivery. Childbirth classes also play a very important role in the occurence of normal delivery. One thing which every pregnant mother must know is that normal delivery is always a good thing for the health of the mother in the longer term. One must avoid going under the knife as much as possible. Our gynaecologists prefer normal delivery any day over cesarian section delivery. When the pregnant woman goes into labour, she is shifted into the labour room where a trained nurse assists you all the while. The foetal heart rate is monitored through Foetal Doppler. Your gynaecologist will motivate you and assist you in pushing the baby down. As soon as the head of the baby comes out, the gynaecologist will pull out the baby, cut the umbilical cord and hand over the baby to the paediatrician who would take care of the new born.
The advantages of a normal delivery are manifold. The recovery time for the mother is much shorter as compared to the cesarian section delivery. There is no cut in the uterus which keeps the uterus strong for any further pregnancies. There is no blood loss and therefore the need for blood transfusion is avoided even if the mother has low haemoglobin count. When no surgery is done the chances of any kind of infection which might be acquired during the surgery is also avoided. Hospital stay is short and mostly the mother is on her feet on the same day and can go to the toilet on her own.
