When a couple who is trying to conceive is unable to do so for a prolonged period of time then one must see a gynaecologist. Your gynaecologist will do some basic tests for the man which includes semen test. If the sperm count is okay then the other tests are done for the woman. These tests include HSG to see whether both the fallopian tubes are open or there is any kind of blockage in these tubes. Ultrasound of the abdomen is done to rule out ovarian cysts or uterine fibroids. Hormone tests are done for both man and woman. For the man mostly testosterone levels are checked while for the woman all the fertility hormone levels are to be checked. If these are all okay then the gynaecologist would advise you to try conceiving through the natural way depending on the results of your follicular monitoring. However if this fails then further tests are done and sometimes operative procedures might be required based on the results of these tests.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI). During IUI, healthy sperm are placed directly in the uterus around the time the woman's ovary releases one or more eggs to be fertilized. Depending on the reasons for infertility, the timing of IUI can be coordinated with your normal cycle or with fertility medications.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most common ART technique. IVF involves stimulating and retrieving multiple mature eggs from a woman, fertilizing them with a man's sperm in a dish in a lab, and implanting the embryos in the uterus three to five days after fertilization.
Mostly IVF is done using the woman's own eggs and her partner's sperm. If there are severe problems with either the eggs or sperm of the couple then they may choose to use eggs, sperm or embryos from a known or anonymous donor.
The treatment of infertility can be quite expensive and a continous drain on the financial resources. The initial testing for finding the cause of infertility could cost you anywhere between Rs. 5000-25000. The cost of IUI treatment is not that expensive and each cycle would cost you around Rs. 15-25 thousand. However if you have to go for IVF then the cost of each cycle would be around 1.25 - 1.50 lacs which does not include the cost for donor sperm or donor eggs.
