The hip joint plays a very important role in most of our daily activities like walking, sitting, turning and twisting. The problems in hip joint are not as common as the knee joint. Osteoarthritis, weakens the bones and affects all the joints. Hip Joint pain can be experienced by patients who suffer from osteoarthritis. Other reasons for hip joint pain could be rheumatoid arthritis, hip fracture, septic arthritis or abnormal bone growth. In early stages of hip joint pain, physiotherapy can be of great help in reducing the pain and improving mobility. Steroid injections also help in achieving the same objectives. However when the pain is so much that it affects your mobility and pain is felt even while lying on the bed then it is probably the time to get hip replacement surgery.
The hip joint is a ball and socket joint. The head of the femur bone is in the form of a ball which goes into the hip socket called acetabulum. In total hip replacement surgery, the acetabulum is changed with a metallic socket. The femur head is also changed and the femur stem is put inside the femur bone. This metallic stem is fixed into the femur with or without the use of bone cement. The bone cement can sometimes cause severe infection in the body and therefore most of the good surgeons try to use uncemented metal on metal implant. This metal on metal implant is one in which the socket, ball and the stem are all made of titanium which is an MRI compatible metal and has the best acceptibility by the human body.
Hip Replacement can be done in two ways - Hip Resurfacing or Total Hip Replacement. In hip resurfacing only the damaged surface of your hip joint bones are removed and replaced with a new surface. Then entire socket and the ball are not replaced. The other type of surgery which is more common and has a better success rate is the total hip replacement surgery in which the entire hip joint consisting of the acetabulum and femur head are replaced. The surgery is mostly done in spinal anaestheia but can also be done in general anaesthesia. The surgeon gives an incision from the pelvic bone till the femur which is normally 12 inches in length. Now some of the surgeons are doing minimally invasive hip replacement surgery in which the incision length is reduced by half. However the results are more important than the length of the incision. So not much fuss should be made about the length of the incision. The surgery lasts for around 90 minutes and the patient is shifted to the post operative ward after the surgery. The patient is shifted to the room on the same day once the effects of anaesthesia worn off. On the second day, the physiotherapy team mobilizes the patient and gets them on the feet with the support of a walker. The patient is taken to the washroom by the rehab team on a walker and can sit on a special high chair which is placed over the western commode. If the patient is able to sit on the bed without much pain and is able to walk for 100-150 ft on a walker then the patient can be discharged.

Not all insurance companies have uniform benefits and therefore it is best to contact the hospital insurance helpdesk with your policy to know the exact coverage available to you. If the hospital is not on the cashless panel of your insurance company then you would get reimbursement for the payment done by you at the hospital for your treatment. This is a very simple process in which you have to fill a claim form, attach the hospital bills, cancelled cheque and the payment would come to your bank account within 15-20 days.
