Upper GI Endoscopy is a test in which a tube is inserted through the mouth which goes all the way into the abdomen and small intestine. This tube has an LED Light and a high definition camera which sends high quality videos of the internal organs of the body. The images which are procured through UGI endoscopy are of esophagus, stomach and upper part of small intestine called duodenum.
Upper GI Endoscopy is done for problems related to Gastro-intestinal diseases like ulcers in the stomach and the intestine. If the patient is suffering from Chest pain which is not related to heart problems then Upper GI Endoscopy might be required to find the cause of the pain. Other indications in which Upper GI Endoscopy is required are trouble in swallowing, unexplained weight loss, chronic vomiting, acid reflux, bleeding in the upper GI tract etc.
An upper GI endoscopy can be used to identify and treat disorders or problems such as
