Echocardiography or echo, is a painless test that uses sound waves to create moving pictures of your heart. The pictures show the size and shape of your heart. They also show how well your heart's chambers and valves are working. This test is done on a Colour Doppler Machine. At Brightstar Hospital we have the most advanced machine for Echocardiography manufactured by GE Medical USA. This machine gives very accurate measurements of the various cardiac parameters. Our Cardiologists led by Dr Anupama Bansal have long experience of working at heart hospitals performing non invasive cardiology investigations as well as performing invasive cardiac tests and procedures. In this test the patient has to lie down on a couch and remove the top clothing. Women can continue to wear bra during the echo test. The cardiologist will apply gel to the area just below your rib cage where heart is located. Then an ultrasound probe is placed on your body and moved gently. The images of the heart are seen on the ultrasound monitor and values are calculated by the cardiologist. One of the most important value which is given by echocardiography is Ejection Fraction (EF). This value provides the blood pumping capacity of the heart.
2D Echocardiography is the most common of the cardiac tests and is performed by Cardiologists. This test measures the health of the heart in resting state. Another form of Echocardiography is Stress Echo in which 2D Echocardiography is done when the patient's heart rate is increased due to walking on the treadmill. If the patient is old and cannot walk on the treadmill then another test called Dobutamine Stress Echo is done in which a drug is injected to the patient to increase the heart rate. Echocardiography of the heart of the foetus (unborn child) is called Foetal Echocardiography and is done by Radiologists. This test is done to detect any congenital anomaly of the heart in the foetus.
Stress Echocardiography gives the functioning of the human heart when the heart is working at full capacity. Maximum Heart Rate is calculated as 220 minus your age. Your heart might be working fine when you are in a resting state meaning that your heart rate is 80-90. However what happens to the functioning of your heart when the heart rate reaches 150-160 beats per minute. This information is provided by Stress Echocardiography.
Dr. Anupama Bansal and her team of Cardiologists perform Echocardiography and Stree Echo at Brightstar Hospital. The cost of 2D Echo is Rs. 2000 while the cost of Stress Echo is Rs. 4000. Brightstar hospital offers complete range of treatment for heart problems. Patients who suffer chest pain or pain in jaw, shoulder etc should immediately come to the Emergency of the hospital where ECG Test is done to rule out any heart attack. If the patient is suffering from heart attack then immediate treatment is started to alleviate the stress on the heart. The patient is then taken for Coronary Angiography and if arteries are found to be blocked then Coronary Angioplasty is done to open the arteries and restore the blood supply. However if the patient is not suffering from heart attack then non invasive tests like TMT, Echocardiography are done to find the cause of chest pain or other symptoms mimicking a heart attack. Echocardiography is the best non invasive test for heart disease while Coronary Angiography is the best invasive test for heart problems.
