COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT SCAN)

CT SCAN

Computed Tomography is a test which is done on CT Scan Machine. The machine uses X-Rays to obtain several hundred images of the body within few seconds. During Covid times, CT Scan has played a pivotal role in the diagnosis of the severity of the infection in the lungs and saved many lives.

Advantages of CT Scan

One of the fastest and most accurate tools for examining the chest, abdomen and pelvis because it provides detailed, cross-sectional views of all types of tissue.

Used to examine patients with injuries from trauma such as a motor vehicle accident.

Performed on patients with acute symptoms such as chest or abdominal pain or difficulty in breathing.

Often the best method for detecting many different cancers, such as lymphoma and cancers of the lung, liver, kidney, ovary and pancreas since the image allows a physician to confirm the presence of a tumor, measure its size, identify its precise location and determine the extent of its involvement with other nearby tissue.

An examination that plays a significant role in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases that can lead to stroke, kidney failure or even death. CT is commonly used to assess for pulmonary embolism and also aneurysms.

Preparation For CT Scan

CT Scan test can be done in two ways - Plain and Contrast. The Plain CT Scan can be done at any point of time and does not require any kind of preparation. In Contrast CT Scan, an iodized agent is injected to the patient in the vein and then CT Scan exam is conducted. Before doing Contrast CT Scan, a blood test called Kidney Function Test is done to see the functioning of the kidneys. The contrast CT Scan can be done only if the patient has normally functioning kidneys. For doing contrast CT Scan, the patient has to be in fasting for 4-5 hours.

Also inform your doctor of any recent illnesses or other medical conditions and whether you have a history of heart disease, asthma, diabetes, kidney disease or thyroid problems. Any of these conditions may increase the risk of an unusual adverse effect due to contrast injection. Women should always inform their physician and the CT technologist if there is any possibility that they may be pregnant. CT Scan should not be done if the woman is pregnant to prevent any damage to the foetus.

During the CT Scan exam, you are asked to lie down on a table. This table moves during the exam. You may be asked to hold breath during the exam. The CT Scan exam on our machine lasts less than 1 minute for most of the studies. The CT Machine has a circular gantry which houses the X-Ray Generator and the Detectors. During the exam, X-Rays are passed through the patient's body and images are captured on the detectors. Higher the number of detectors, better is the CT Scan machine.

CT Scan Exams

CT Scan Brain - CT Scan is the gold standard in cases of Head Injury. Plain CT Scan of the Brain is done to determine any bleed, fracture, compression or midline shift in the brain due to the accident. Since the accident patients cannot stay still, CT Scan is of great value because the test can be completed in few seconds. CT Scan of the Brain with Contrast is done to detect any kind of tumour in the brain

HRCT Chest - High Resolution Lung CT emerged as the single most important medical test which saved the lives of millions of people during the recent covid pandemic.

CT Scan PNS - Patients suffering from chronic sinus do well to get NCCT of the PNS region

CT Scan Abdomen - CT Scan of the abdomen reveals most of the diseases of the gastrointestinal system including cancers.

CT Scan KUB - Kidney stones which are missed on ultrasound can be visualized on NCCT of the KUB region

CT Angiography- Study of the blood vessels - arteries and veins for any kind of blockage or aneurysm is also done best by CT Angiography test. The CT Angiography can be done on Peripheral Vessels, Cerebral Vessels, Carotid Vessels, Coronary Vessels, Renal Vessels, Abdominal Vessles, Pulmonary Vessels etc.

The cost of CT Scan Studies ranges between Rs. 2,000 - Rs. 15,000. The high cost of the tests is due to the high cost of the machine. Any good CT Scan machine costs in excess of Rs. 1.5 Crores. The tube in the CT Scan machine lasts for 3-4 years and changing the tube costs Rs. 25-30 lacs.
